Alaska High Risk Auto Insurance
Several insurance companies operate under license in the state of Alaska. Some are very well known, such as Allstate, Geico, State Farm, or The Hartford. Others may be a bit surprising, for example the Insurance Company of the State of Pennsylvania. All told, approximately 47 companies offer automobile coverage in Alaska.
Minimum Coverage Requirements
State laws define the minimum amount of insurance a person must carry in Alaska. Requirements are $50,000 per person bodily injury and $100,000 per accident bodily injury. Property damage must be covered up to $25000 per accident. These are the absolute minimum coverages required by the state.
Tort vs. No Fault Coverage Details
Alaska uses a "tort system" for dealing with automobile accidents. This means that someone will be found to be at fault in any accident that occurs. The person found to be at fault, and their insurance carrier, will be held accountable for all expenses incurred by the other parties involved, even if this exceeds the insurance coverage that a person carries.
Uninsured Motorist Coverage
One coverage that is available, though not required, is uninsured/underinsured motorist, which covers one in the event the person found at fault does not have adequate insurance coverage to cover a given accident.
Proof of Insurance Is Not Optional
Alaska requires a person to carry proof of insurance whenever operating a vehicle. A citation may be issued for failure to have this proof and show it on demand to a police officer. However, a conviction cannot be secured if the person is able to produce acceptable proof of insurance that was in effect at the time of the citation.
