California High Risk Auto Insurance

Automobile policies in California are offered by about 130 different companies licensed to operate in the state. National standards such as AIG, Geico, State Farm, and others are available as well as some California based insurers such as California Automobile, California Casualty, and California State Auto.

California Insurance Coverage Minimum Requirements

The state requirements for automobile insurance are modest compared to other states. Bodily injury liability minimum coverage is $15000 per person/$30000 per accident. Property damage is $5000. Some drivers in California are covered under the California Automobile Assigned Risk Plan which sets minimum limits at $10,000/$20,000/$3000. California is another tort system state, meaning that someone will be found at fault in the event of an accident, and that person (and their insurance) will be held responsible for all medical bills and property damage repairs incurred by other parties in the accident.

Modest Minimum Requirements Mask Hefty Penalties

While the insurance minimum requirements are modest in the state of California, penalties for not showing proof of insurance on demand are not. First Offense penalties include a minimum fine of $100 - $200. Second offenses carry a minimum fine of $500. Drivers are given 24 hours to produce proof of insurance covering the time of a traffic stop or accident where the proof was not shown. Failure to do so will result in the suspension of vehicle registration and impound of vehicle until insurance is acquired and proof shown. In addition, fees are required to get the vehicle out of impound and reinstate the registration.
