Missouri High Risk Auto Insurance
Missouri state law requires every motor vehicle owner to carry liability insurance and provide proof of insurance when registering a vehicle, renewing license plates, or whenever an accident or traffic violation occurs. The Missouri Department of Revenue may also request proof of insurance at any time. Missouri liability insurance must cover the following minimum amounts:
- $25,000 per person for bodily injury
- $50,000 per accident for bodily injury
- $10,000 per accident for property
Uninsured Motorist Coverage Required
State laws also mandate uninsured motorist coverage which is obtained as a part of your regular automobile insurance policy. Uninsured motorist minimum coverage amounts are $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for bodily injury. If a vehicle owner does not purchase insurance or allows insurance to lapse he may have to purchase high risk auto insurance on the vehicle.
Multiple High Risk Auto Insurance Carriers Available
State Farm, All-State, Travelers, Progressive, Liberty Mutual, and GEICO are several of the major providers in Missouri. The AARP and The Hartford also offer customized insurance to individuals over the age of fifty. The providers issue insurance identification cards and insurance binders as legal proofs of insurance. If drivers do not secure insurance through an insurance company, they must have self-insurance or file a surety or real estate bond with the Department of Revenue.
No Proof of Insurance Can Result in Higher Premiums
Penalties for failing to show proof of insurance include four points assessed against the driver's record, insurance monitoring by the Driver's License Bureau, or suspension of the driver's license. Multiple traffic citations and accidents can also result in a driver being required to purchase high risk insurance. High risk car insurance is offered by many insurance providers, but costs substantially more than regular premiums.
