West Virginia High Risk Auto Insurance

Liability insurance is a requirement to operate a vehicle on the roadways of West Virginia. There are many different companies that are licensed to underwrite and sell high risk car insurance policies in the state of West Virginia, including Progressive, State Farm, Direct, Nationwide, Geico, and more.

In an effort to protect drivers from the high costs of medical care and vehicle repairs associated with accidents, West Virginia has established minimum Liability coverage limits that must be met to legally operate a vehicle. These coverage minimums are Personal Injury Liability of at least $20,000 per individual to $40,000 per accident, Property Damage Liability of $10,000, uninsured/underinsured motorist bodily injury of $20,000/$40,000, and uninsured/underinsured property damage of $10,000.

West Virginia is a state that uses a tort system of assigning responsibility for accidents. One driver will be found to be at fault and this driver and his/her insurance will be financially responsible for paying all medical and repair bills incurred by the other parties in the accident.

In order to register a vehicle in the state of West Virginia, owners must sign a statement that the vehicle is covered by liability insurance. Proof of insurance must be carried in the vehicle at all times and shown to police officers upon request. Failure to show proof of insurance will result in immediate suspension of the vehicle registration. In order to have the registration reinstated, the owner of the vehicle will be required to pay fees of $150 and show proof of high risk auto insurance to the DMV.
